Advance your mushroom growing skills with shiitake mushrooms. Shiitake require an intermediate level of knowledge on mushroom growing, but are a great way to learn new skills. This is a very productive commercial strain with fruit bodies that have a rich umami flavor. Ramp up any culinary dish with the savory flavors of shiitake mushrooms.

What is a liquid culture?

Liquid cultures are a mixture of mushroom mycelium and a liquid nutrient blend. Liquid culture inoculation of grain is able to be performed in clean areas with very little air movement.

Directions:

Use this liquid culture on grains, such as Myterra Labs' Organic Rye or Organic Oats. One syringe is able to inoculate 2 bags of grain. This culture can also be used to inoculate agar plates and liquid culture jars to expand the culture.

Shiitake mushrooms will need to be fruited on Myterra Labs Woodlovers substrate. This strain of shiitake fruits at a variety of temperatures and is a slow growing species, so be patient and you will be rewarded.

Once your grain is fully colonized by the mycelium, you will have enough spawn to add into 2-8 bags of Woodlovers. Trying to produce mushrooms from grain is very difficult and does not yield as many mushrooms. Once you have added your Shiitake spawn into your Woodlover bags, seal the bag and shake it to evenly distribute the grains. Do not shake again after this step.

Allow the Woodlover bags to colonize and watch as the fruiting blocks start to develop big white lumps - this stage is called "popcorning". Do not disturb the bag during this process. Brown liquid will form on the block - don't worry, these are metabolites formed by the mushrooms and is completely normal. Once the entire bag is full of lumps, you can remove it from the bag and place it in an area with high humidity (70-80 %) or mist the block twice a day. Discontinue spraying once mushrooms start to form. Some patches of the block might form dark brown lumps - this is also very normal and some growers will only remove the fruiting block from the bag once the entire block is brown. Patience is the key with shiitake mushrooms, but you will be rewarded with approximately 0.75 - 2lb of mushrooms if you follow these steps.

Care instructions:

Ensure that you use a sterile technique to inoculate the grain bags: Wipe the outside of the bag or injection port with 70% isopropyl alcohol prior to inoculation and do not allow the syringe tip or needle to touch any items that have not been cleaned with alcohol.

Store excess liquid culture in the fridge with a capped syringe.

King oysters prefer cooler temperatures to fruit, but room temperature is fine for grain inoculation and colonization.
